Welcome to the Community of Sitka's Tlingit Language Preservation Project Blog

The Tlingit Language Preservation project is a multi-year, multi-phase project initiated by the Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) with financial assistance from the US Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Native Americans. In their “Interactive Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger”, UNESCO placed Tlingit (or Lingit) on its list of critically endangered languages—one step from extinct—with the number of fluent Tlingit speakers listed at 300 persons in the year 2000, a number that has continued to decline. In an effort to combat this trend, STA, along with the Sitka Native Education Project, has launched a project to maintain and preserve the Tlingit language in Sitka, Alaska. Currently, the grant is in phase I, the ANA Tlingit Language Survey, which will help us establish the current status of the Tlingit language in Sitka. After collecting data and getting community feedback on the project, the subsequent stages will include a planning stage, an implementation stage and, if successful, a total immersion phase entitled Haa Lingit Yoo X’atangi Kudi, or "Our Tlingit Language Nest and Survival School

ANA Tlingit Language Preservation Project Staff

Partnerships: We are currently developing partnerships with other organizations in Sitka.

Sitka Native Education Program (SNEP):
SNEP is currently our main partnering organization, providing the space from which we operate our project (The Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall or ANB Hall) and providing assistance in development and planning of the Tlingit Language Preservation project.

Sitka Tribe of Alaska's Education and Training Department:
We are currently working with STA's Education and Training office to develop joint activities that include, but are not limited to, a project that will have Sitkan youth filming interviews with elders and others from the community about the Tlingit language and the ANA Language Grant/Tlingit Language Preservation Project Youth Advisory Panel.

Pacific High School:
We are currently working with the administration and staff at Pacific High School to explore ways of incorporating Tlingit language teaching and learning into Pacific's every-day, Place-Based Expeditionary Learning curriculum.

Sitka High School:
In addition to our discussions with Pacific High School, we are currently working with the administration at Sitka's largest high school, Sitka High, to find ways of encorporating both language and cultural activities into their school-day and extra-curricular programing.

The Sitka Charter School Exploratory Committee:
We are in the initial stages of discussions with the Sitka Charter School Exploratory Committee about how the proposed charter school might be able to incorporate Tlingit language teaching and learning into its mission and curriculum. The early discussions include the possibility of the charter school being the location for a Tlingit "Language Nest".

Kettleson Memorial Library:
Kettleson Memorial Library will be hosting a Tlingit language/history/culture exhibit in late August or early September. The exhibit will include a display created by the Sitka Native Education Program's summer session participants and a showcase of Tlingit language materials and other literature related to Tlingit history and culture. In addition to the displays, we hope to have several events including performances by SNEP singers and dancers.
